Liones and Querator, two of Australia’s finest rappers, have collaborated to create the super fly force that is ILLLEVEL. These two vocalists are hip hop main stayers, whose music, individually, has been highly acclaimed in Australia and been circulat¬ing in the hip hop scene since 1993. Spirit Level is the first album released as a joint force and is due to hit the streets on July 5th 2012.
“‘spirit level for me is about owning the fact that whichever way the bubble rolls things eventually sort themselves out in life and for me the bubble is rarely in the middle and in a state of evenness and equilibrium,” says Que.
Living in two different states in Australia they collaborated via phone, email and many planes trips with children and partners in tow to complete this album. Liones, whose highly acclaimed self titled album was on high rotation on Australian radio in 2003, was writing rhymes in between feeding her new born baby, Joella. She recorded tracks with Joella strapped to her in a baby sling and keeping an eye on her three year old, Owen.
Que, who’s a hip hop veteran and produced her first ep Tellin it like it is on cassette in 1993, was forming Australia’s first hip hop choir ‘Massive’, running hip hop workshops whilst creating Spirit Level. It is this kind of commitment and focus to their craft that has enabled Liones and Que to write such a proficient and sophisticated album that expresses the profound and inane in life so ardently.
“As I have moved into my 30’s, the love and passion that I have for hip hop has not subsided, in fact as the years go by; my art form becomes more and more important to me and my identity. Illlevel gives me space to create and be myself, as a mother and partner, this, which is my own is very important to me, it keeps me grounded and is what I love to do. It is a constant in my life, it moves and changes with me,” says Liones
This love and passion is clearly reflected in Liones’s rhymes as she gives narrative to life events from a woman’s perspective that are raw and honest. She draws on her experiences and feelings and relays them in a succinct yet patulous manner. The listener can relate to and highly admire her storytelling expertise simultaneously.
Que compliments Liones’s capable skills with her own style of fine rapping as she is a modern day wordsmith. She plays with semantics and linguistically twists language with intellect and wit. Que is a feminist and ultimately has an optimistic world view. This is reflected in her superlative rhymes that would see any opponent bow down with respect and awe. It is the combination of these two accomplished song writers that makes Spirit Level such an effusive album that is diverse yet musically exceptional.
Spirit Level was produced by Prowla, one of the finest hip hop producers/DJ’s in Australia, who is also a highly acclaimed MC and Graffiti Artist in his own right. Other producers/DJ’s who have added to the atmosphere of the album include DJ’s Bacon and Butcher, Calski, Bristronix, ASIP and LKR. On backing vocals are the soulful sounds of the highly commendable Jess Harlen, Torika and Demilition. Illlevel come equipped with the most supreme talent that Australia has to offer. It is no wonder then that Spirit Level commands such attention.
Spirit Level has been released by Nuffsaid Records which is the longest running hip hop label in Australia. Well before Australian hip hop hit the shelves of JB Hi Fi and iTunes, Nuffsaid was spearheading an unpopular and seemingly dangerous youth culture back in the 90’s. To this day the label continues to make music despite the changing waves of public opinion.
